5 healthy Halloween snack ideas

Halloween doesn’t have to be all sugar and sweets. With a little creativity, you can turn spooky season into a celebration of healthy eating – without losing the fun! We’ve brewed up a cauldron of snack ideas that are nutritious, budget-friendly, and perfect for kids and adults alike.

Get the kids involved and give these fun snack ideas a try: 

1. Banana ghosts and mandarin lanterns

Boost your fruit intake with banana ghosts and mandarin lanterns.

Banana ghosts

Step 1 – Slice a banana in half and press two edible eyeballs, sultanas or chocolate chips to make eyes.

Step 2 – Press one sultana or chocolate chip to form a mouth.

Step 3 – Insert a popsicle stick into the end of the banana ghost for easy serving (optional).

Mandarin lanterns

Step 1 – Peel a mandarin, keeping it whole.

Step 2 – Cut a celery stalk into a short piece (2-3 cm).

Step 3 – Insert celery stick into the top of the mandarin to resemble a pumpkin stem.


2. Apple monsters

Add a bit of fun to Halloween with our apple monsters – spooky, silly and packed with goodness.

Step 1 – Wash and slice apple into quarters. Cut a wedge out of the skin side of each quarter to create a mouth.

Step 2 – Spread peanut butter (or your preferred nut-free butter) inside the mouth area.

Step 3 – Add sunflower kernels (or pumpkin seeds) along the edge of the mouth to resemble teeth.

Step 4 – Attach edible eyes (or sultanas or chocolate chips) above the mouth using a dab of spread to stick them on.

Step 5 – Place a slice of strawberry inside the mouth for a tongue (optional).


3. Fruit kebab ghouls

Get the kids involved in building their own ghouls for a fun Halloween activity.

Step 1 – Wash and cut seasonal fruit (or vegies) into bite-sized pieces.

Step 2 – Slide the fruit (or vegies) onto skewers in alternating colours and shapes to create fun ghoul-like bodies.

Step 3 – Add a marshmallow for the ‘head’ of the ghoul. Draw a face on the marshmellow using a food-safe marker or chocolate icing.


4. Witchy guacamole face

Add a little magic to your spread with our witchy guacamole face – colourful and packed with vegie goodness!

Step 1 – Spread guacamole into the centre of a plate or shallow bowl.

Step 2 – Create a witch’s hat using plain corn chips.

Step 3 – Make the hair by arranging grated or spiralised carrot around the top and sides of the head.

Step 4 – Decorate the face using seasonal produce (e.g. blueberries for eyes, cucumber slices for nose and eyebrows and capsicum for lips).


5. Vegie and tzatziki skeleton

Build a spooky skeleton that’s as tasty as it is healthy – our vegie and tzatziki skeleton is a fun way to crunch through Halloween!

Step 1 – Wash and cut seasonal vegetables (e.g. cucumber, carrots, celery, capsicum, broccoli, cauliflower, snowpeas) into sticks, florets or bite-sized pieces.

Step 2 – Create the skeleton shape on a large platter.

  • Use a small bowl of tzatziki as the head and lettuce as the ‘hair’.
  • Arrange cucumber as the spine.
  • Use capsicum as ribs and broccoli as the ‘insides’.
  • Use carrot sticks, capsicum strips and celery sticks for arms and legs.
  • Add broccoli and cauliflower florets for joints, hands and feet.
